Our stance
Support that ends in independence.
Doing everything for you is not good support. You being able to do it yourself is. That is the goal.
First we do it with you.
Then we watch from beside you.
Then you do it alone.
At the same time, taking a risk requires ground solid enough to fail on. Housing, procedures, health, emergencies. Getting that right is our job.
A day at FLA
How a day here can go.
Classes run in two shifts, morning or afternoon, and you belong to one of them — the school decides which, based on your Japanese level when you enrol. What follows is one example; how students spend the rest of the day varies.
Morning-class students

Getting to school
3 to 25 minutes from the dormitory by bicycle.

Four 45-minute periods: integrated Japanese, kanji, listening, reading.

After class
Self-study, pathway consultation, preparing project or club work, community activities, and errands. Some students work part-time within the scope of their permission.
Afternoon-class students

Before class
Self-study, pathway consultation, errands, or talking to the staff member responsible. How the morning is used is up to each student.

Afternoon class
Four 45-minute periods: integrated Japanese, kanji, listening, reading.

After class
Coursework, project and club work, community activities. Some students work part-time within the scope of their permission.

01 Housing
You have somewhere to live from day one.
Sixteen student houses across Fukui City, furnished and equipped, with bedding provided. Three to twenty-five minutes from school by bicycle.
You don't arrive and start hunting for a room. Your life here begins the day you land.

02 Arrival
Someone is there when you land.
Life in Japan starts the day you arrive, and how those first weeks go shapes everything that follows.
Airport pick-up
Our staff meet you at Chubu Centrair and take you to the school and your accommodation.
Setting up your life
Shopping, your route to school, the things you need. We go round with you the first time.
City hall procedures
We go with you and show you how, so that next time you can do it alone.
03 Who to ask
You always know who to ask.
"Just tell us if you have a problem" doesn't work — students don't tell you. So each area has a named person responsible for it.

You can also be supported in your own language: among our full-time staff, five speak English, three Chinese, two Vietnamese and one Nepali.
Acting after attendance drops is too late.
We come to you before it does.
FLA's own study-support scheme
So that effort leads to the next challenge.
We look at more than academic results. Attendance, day-to-day conduct, inquiry work, activities outside class and involvement in the local community all count.
Students who meet the school's criteria receive 50% or 30% of the fee for their application to extend their period of stay. This is a support scheme run by FLA itself.

This is not available to every student. Eligibility, the rate and the amount covered are decided under the school's own regulations, which are explained in full after enrolment.
We introduced it so that students who take their studies, their daily life and their place in the community seriously find the next step a little easier to take.
Note: this scheme starts with eligible applications received on or after 1 October 2026, the date from which the statutory fee for extending a period of stay is revised (Immigration Services Agency of Japan).
Note: this is separate from any statutory reduction or waiver of that fee. Whether you qualify for a statutory reduction is a matter for the Immigration Services Agency.
04 Families and partner organisations
Word actually reaches you.
For the people sending someone they love, the greatest reassurance is simply knowing how they are.
We design communication with families, financial supporters and partner organisations as part of the support itself — not only when something goes wrong.
